Brain Injury and Anger

Anger is an emotion that all people feel and is not an inherently bad thing to experience. Anger becomes negative when used in a damaging manner with manipulation, intimidation, and showing signs of no remorse. Brain injury can result in an increased sensitivity to stress and lead to outbursts of anger. An individual with a brain injury may feel frustrated by challenges they are experiencing in their abilities and skills – especially if they were once able to complete these tasks easily. In the setting of a correctional facility, an inmate does not have control over their daily activities and anger can stem from being dependent on others and being told what to do. Individuals may feel like they have more control when they demonstrate their anger, though in reality the opposite effect may happen – especially in a correctional facility.
