The Cerebellum

The cerebellum, located at the base of the brain, receives signals from the motor and sensory centers in order to govern movement. In addition, this area:

  • Coordinates muscle tone and balance
  • Controls voluntary movement
  • Manages memory for reflexive motor acts and learned motor behaviors

Cerebellum injuries can contribute to:

  • Unsteady walking and loss of balance
  • Dizziness (Vertigo)
  • Tremors
  • Unable to coordinate arms/hands for tasks (Ataxia)
  • Difficulty producing clear speech (Dysarthria)
