Supporting Brain Injury State Funding
Brain Injury Service Programs Across Virginia are Urging Legislators to Provide Funding to Strengthen and Expand Services
What are we advocating for? Funding to deliver essential services.
As we diligently and successfully implement the 2024 DARS Workforce Retention and Strengthening and Expansion Funding, we've only just begun. We recognize that our growth brings with it critical ongoing needs. In many communities, the newly funded expansions are often the only source of rehabilitative services for those seeking to improve their recovery and quality of life. The first steps have been taken, now we must accommodate this growth.
We've got an exciting update from the General Assembly!
Great news! The General Assembly has allocated $1.35 million for community-based brain injury services. If approved by the governor, $600,000 will go toward workforce retention, while $750,000 will strengthen brain injury services across Virginia.
Additionally—$1.6 million has been set aside to support an in-patient neurobehavioral services unit. This funding will help create facilities for 20 individuals living with traumatic brain injuries or neurocognitive disorders. If approved, these in-patient units are expected to be in place by January 1, 2026.
Before this becomes official, the governor must sign the General Assembly budget—so stay tuned!

Critical Work Remaining
Acquired brain injuries affect the lives of people of all ages. Anyone can experience a brain injury, but data indicates that some groups are at greater risk of dying from or experiencing long-term health problems after the injury.
