The Frontal Lobe

The frontal lobe can be divided into the pre-frontal cortex (anterior portion of the head) and the motor strip (curves over the top of the head). The functions of this lobe include:

  • Planning and organizing
  • Problem solving and judgement
  • Attention
  • Personality, behavior and emotional control
  • Executive functions
  • Spoken language (left frontal lobe) – Broca’s area

Frontal lobe injury can result in trouble:

  • Getting started on tasks (Initiation)
  • Being flexible with change
  • Controlling emotions and impulses
  • Expressing thoughts accurately
  • Setting appropriate goals and planning to achieve them
