Concussions in Auto Accidents
Guest Blog by Breit Biniazan, 2020 Mission Partner of BIAV
While there are a number of different types of injuries someone can sustain in a car crash, some of the most severe are those which impact the brain. These injuries can occur even when the driver and his or her passengers are wearing seat belts. For example, if a vehicle was t-boned, the force could cause the head to make impact with the door. In a head-on collision, the seat belt may not work as expected, resulting in the passenger’s head hitting the dashboard.
Concussions are some of the most common brain injuries sustained in auto accidents. Concussions occur when there is sudden trauma to the skull and brain. While acts of violence or sports injuries are common sources of concussions, many also result from auto accidents. Concussions vary in severity and can cause the victim to experience various symptoms.
A mild concussion is the least serious TBI, often resulting in headaches, nausea, and dizziness. This type of concussion can be very brief, lasting less than 15 minutes. The individual usually does not lose consciousness. If someone sustains a moderate concussion, they are more likely to experience more severe symptoms including short-term memory problems, drowsiness, or confusion. This lasts longer than 15 minutes, but typically, the victim does not lose consciousness.
A grade three concussion, or severe concussion, can result in the victim losing consciousness for a brief period of time. They may also experience balance issues, slowed reaction time, and cognitive issues. No matter the severity of the concussion, it is important for the victim to seek medical attention to determine if there are any underlying issues involved and whether further damage may occur to the individual’s brain.
As soon as an accident occurs, the injured party should reach out to get medical treatment. This not only helps them to physically recover from the damages sustained, but it can also help in a potential personal injury lawsuit put together by the injured party and his or her legal counsel.
