Brain Injury Awareness and Prevention

Brain injuries are a leading cause of death and disability among children and adults under the age of 45. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that every 23 seconds, someone in this country sustains a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and that annually there are an estimated 28,000 trips to the emergency room due to TBI in Virginia alone. The national annual incidence of brain injury is more than five times the annual incidence of spinal cord injury, HIV/AIDS, breast cancer, and multiple sclerosis combined. The costs associated with TBI are over $56 billion each year nationwide.

BIAV is actively involved in increasing the awareness of brain injury by educating the public about this "silent epidemic and its resulting physical, emotional, and behavioral consequences, and brain injury prevention tips and techniques. We develop and distribute numerous education and prevention resources to professionals, government leaders, schools, hospitals, coaches, athletic trainers, and others in an effort to raise public awareness about brain injury and increase the number of individuals practicing effective prevention methods (click here to visit our prevention page) for more information on ways to prevent brain injuries from occurring).
